I'm back!

Back in the U.S. anyway. I had a great time, but it's great to be back and I love New York. I think I have a new perspective on The City, having been to a few more of the world's cities. It has been beautiful here...until today. It's cold! Might need to go shopping...

Euro Pete on the Beat

Peter had to go to Malta on Friday to chase down the priest that allegedly molested Senator Foley. Unfortunately, the Vatican silenced him before they could get an interview. He came back last night, so I had two days to myself. Coincidentally, I spent most of those two days at the Vatican. Yesterday, I FINALLY saw the Sistine Chapel. Seems like I woke up every morning last week saying, today I'm going to see the Sistine Chapel. Missed the tour on Wednesday and ran into the Brits. The four of us planned to go on Thursday, but failed to motivate. We did the Trevi fountain instead and they left Friday morning. On Friday, I got in the wrong line and ended up doing St. Peter's basilica. I missed the line for the dome until it was too late to go up there, so I'll have to do that next time. On Saturday, I was planning to cut with Chris's tour group (Chris's idea), but the tour was canceled and I didn't find out until I was at the Vatican. Ended up having to stand in line myself. It was worth the hour I had to wait and the crowds I had to manuever through to get there. I spent about half an hour in the chapel itself. Pretty amazing.

Today is my last day in Rome. Peter is back from Malta and we are planning to have a lazy Sunday. We're off to a park near his house and then some gelato and maybe some NFL football. My flight to NY is at 10:30am tomorrow.

Rome's Top 10 with the Manchester's Top 3

Yesterday, I met some Brits on the bus trying to find their way to the Colisseum. I was headed that way myself later that day, so I told them which way to go. They seemed like a fun trio and as I headed off to sightsee on my own, I was wishing I had been a little more outgoing. But I thought to myself, if it's meant to be...I'll see them again.

That afternoon, I did my walking tour with Peter's friend, Chris. He gave us a brief history of Rome and took us by Circus Maximus, to some temples including the Pantheon, through the old jewish ghetto, by the imperial palace (Palatine hill), past the forum and finally to the Colisseum. It was a great tour, though we didn't go into the Colisseum, so I think I will try to do that on Friday.

This morning I was supposed to get up early and meet Chris's colleague to do the Vatican tour at 10am. I didn't make it. Must have just missed them at the meeting spot. I hopped on the bus to the Vatican and thought I would try and catch up with them there. I knew the pope was speaking today and that was the first thing they were doing. I got there and it was packed. It quickly became obvious that trying to meet up with them (even with his cell phone number) was going to be a logistical nightmare. I decided to just walk into the crowd and hope that I might see someone I recognized from the tour the day before. I picked a spot to enter the mass of people and started walking in and the first person I saw was one of the Brits from the bus the day before. He saw me at the same time. They said they came to see the pope today, but were coming back tomorrow to do the Vatican. They were on a mission to see the Top 10 of Rome in the 3 days they had. I ended up joining them. We only made it to 1.5 of the 10. Turns out you need a reservation for the Galeria Borghese, but it's in a beautiful park and we ended up napping in the sun and off-roading in a bicycle built for 4, instead. (They should put that in the guide book.) We're planning to head out to the Vatican at like 7am tomorrow, but they have dinner plans at 9pm, so we'll see what happens...

The Louvre

So, on my last night in Paris I finally made it to the Louvre (and it was open). I made Peter do the Da Vinci Code tour with me. It was AWESOME in a supremely cheesy way. Narrated by Jean Reno, it takes through the parts of the Louvre they go through in the book and talks about paintings and sculptures along the way. If you only have an hour in the Louvre (like I did -- sad I know, but I'll go back), it's a fun way to spend it.

The Lunch Spot

Two of the three days I've spent in Rome, I've had lunch at Roscioli's. It's near Peter's office and he eats there almost every day. Both times I've had a slice of mozzarella pizza (€1.50) that the fold in half and wrap for the perfect walk and eat meal. The also have little dishes of pasta in foil trays -- in portions just my size. Peter is always greeted warmly as the Rosciolis and the Kiefers go way back. Even though I've had pizza for my last three meals, I'm looking forward to another slice

Two metro trains crash in Rome

There was a huge subway accident this morning in Rome. Two people died and many more were injured, some of them very seriously. I, fortunately, was nowhere near it. Peter is heading over there to report on it for the Herald Tribune. I took the subway for the first time last night when Peter and I went to a premiere at Rome's first film festival. We saw Alatriste starring Viggo Mortensen who attended the screening. It was a little long and I thought it was a bit difficult to follow all the sub-plots, mainly because it was hard to distinguish the many dark-haired bearded men from each other, but I enjoyed it. We had great seats thanks to an article Peter wrote in the NY Times over the weekend that went over well with the festival organizers. Looks like some of the festival events have been canceled due to the accident this morning, but the screenings will still happen. We're planning to go to as many as we can this week.

Cortona

Spent an amazing weekend in Cortona! Click here to see some of the MANY pictures I took. Peter and I stayed at this little house called The Tower. We went to celebrate my friend, Sebastian's, birthday and stayed with his mom. The Tower was awesome. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, great kitchen. Charming with just the right amount of modern comfort (i.e. there is a well, but you don't have to use it.) It was like a dream. So much good food, amazing views, wine, grappa, and best of all -- good people. I'm back in Rome for a week. Planning to do a little sight seeing and check out some films at the Rome Film Festival.

Ciao from Roma!

I have arrived in Rome! Kinda feels like I'm going back further and
further in time. London, Paris and now Rome. It'll be interesting to
end my trip in NY. It's really great to see Peter, another great Peter
in my life. He's busy writing a story about a bridge for the Herald
Tribune. When he's done we're going out for a drink. I was traveling
pretty much all day even though the flight was only an hour and
forty-five minutes. Peter's done writing. We're out.

Last day in Paris

Not much of one, really. Packed, checked out and am making my journey to the airport. It's a small airport 50 mi outside Paris. The trip to the airport will be almost as long as my flight to Rome.

Had an amazing meal last night accompanied by a great bottle of wine at this little place my friend, Josh, MADE me go to near our hotel. Josh was staying at the same hotel last week. We overlapped by one night -- Nuit Blanche, but didn't manage to meet up. He ate at this restaurant, Les Papilles, on his last night. It's a pre-fixe menu and he wanted to see what other dishes they serve. I took Peter and it was a great way to end my stay in Paris. We both went to bed stuffed. I don't think I've ever eaten so much.

The meal started off with a mushroom soup with bacon, croutons and some kind of cream or cheese. Then we had chicken over vegetables in a kind of a stew. They served it in a copper pot. Next was tapenade on bread and some amazing little piece of cheese. Finally, a pineapple panacotta with a passion fruit glaze on top.
The guys that run the place are really nice (and they speak English!). It looks like a wine store from the outside. I highly recommend it!

Shopping on rue St-Honoré

I woke up early this morning! Was out the door by 9:30am. Considering that until this morning I've been dead to the world until past noon everyday, that's quite an accomplishment. Went shopping in the morning, hit the Rodin museum in the afternoon, and met up with Peter at the Eiffel tower for dinner. More pics later...

Went to the Louvre

It was closed.

Only Berkeley

Cal (16) beat Oregon (11) over the weekend. My friend, Jason, sent me this quote:

"Tedford has turned Cal into a football power -- but it's still Cal. Cosmologist George F. Smoot, who won the Nobel Prize in physics on Tuesday, was introduced before the game to the cheering student section, which chanted 'Nobel Prize! Nobel Prize!'"

Couldn't see what I looked like this morning, so I took this picture. (Bought a new skirt in London -- the only purchase I made.) I'm staying at Hotel Gay Lussac in the Latin Quarter. My room is clean and not too tiny. It's 60 euros a night, and I'm pretty happy with it.
Going to meet up with Peter now. I think he's napping in my room. He has class everyday until 1:30pm which works out well because I'm still jetlagged and tend to sleep in until about then. I'm getting about 12 hours a night (when I do sleep).

Heading home...

There were fire dancers out front. A movie was just starting inside the cathedral when we got there about the history of Notre Dame. Perfect timing!

I ended up sleeping until after 3pm on Sunday. By the time Peter and I motivated to do anything it was about 8pm. We decided to go get dinner near Notre Dame. One stop up on the B line from where I'm staying. It was a nice night and the moon was almost full.

We found out the trains stopped at 1am and decided we'd stay out and take a cab. Unfortunately, I hit the wall at about 1:30am and cabs were hard to come by. So we walked home and I was a big baby about it.

Tall Black Men

We ran into some friends of Alonzo's. I think a few of them play professional basketball in Paris. Peter is about 6'5" and he was about average height in this group. So far, my experience of Paris indicated that there were a lot of tall black men there.

We met up with Peter's friend from DC, Alonzo, who is also studying in Paris and headed out to Bastille. There were tons of people in the streets and all the restaurants and bars were packed. We started out the night with a crepe. Mmm...

Another sleepless night?

Turns out my first night in Paris was "Nuit Blanche 2006". A night when all the bars and clubs stay open all night. Yay.

Arriving in Paris

One of my best friends, Peter Abe, came to meet me at the station. We became good friends over problem sets in college. He's one of the best people I know and I came to Paris to visit him.

Eurostar

I rode the Eurostar from London to Paris in Leisure class (one above Economy) and I loved it. I could have stayed on that train all day. It helped that it was not full and I got to move to a seat with a big window and a table to myself.

Long Night

After walking up, down and around Brick Lane looking for a place to get one last drink, we finally found a place and had another beer. By then it was probably about 3am and we all headed home. We were pretty sad when we realized there was no microwave to heat up our leftovers from dinner, but Matt got creative with the stove. By the time we finished eating it was about 4:30 and that's when Mike showed up...with like 10 friends. They stayed until almost 10am when I had my alarm set to go off so I could catch my train to Paris the next day. Needless to say, I didn't sleep well.

After AKA, we went back home, dropped off the food and headed out to meet up with Matt's friends, Jamie & Heinrich (sp?) at The Royal Oak. They are really nice people and they took us around their neighborhood and over to Brick Lane where all the Indian/Pakistani shops are.

The DLG

Sebastian had to go back to work, so I spent the rest of the day walking around Portabello and down to Notting Hill taking pictures. I met up with Matthew and Jigesh for dinner near MPC. We went to this Indian tapas place called Imli that Matthew is a regular at and ordered way too much food. We were happy to have to leftovers later. After dinner, Matthew and I headed off to find AKA, a club that a bunch of MPC folks were at, including The DLG. I had heard a lot about this DLG character in the few days I'd been in London and was looking forward to meeting him. (The DLG is pictured here in a white turtleneck.) Finding the club proved to be more of a challenge than it should have been. We must have walked around it three or four times. We finally found it and had a few much deserved drinks.

Lunch with Sebastian

On Friday I met my friend, Sebastian, near his work/home. He took me to this place he frequents called the Grove Cafe for lunch. Had a really good lentil soup. The cafe is closing mid-January because the rents on Portabello Rd. where it is located are getting jacked up at the end of the year. Sounds like all the mom and pop places are going to all disappear. After lunch we went to a coffee place up the road (past the Starbucks) next to an American Apparel. He said McDonald's tried to move in next door, but the neighbors protested. (I guess they have their standards.) Apparently, there is a big carnival celebration at the end of August in that area that gets pretty big.

Where I stayed in London

Mike and Matt have a really nice place. Unfortunately, there's a bar next door that unloads their kegs at about 8am. Ok if you work. Not so much if you're jetlagged and ti-red.
